Sucari Jacobo

born in 1958

videographer, director, musician, teacher, media artist

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1958, Sucari studied cinematography and philosophy at Tel-Aviv University, Israel, later moving to live in Barcelona, where he took his degree in information science. Founder member of the independent video association La 12 Visual, along with Xabela Vargas, Teresa Picazo and Toni Serra.

Over time, Sucari's work has built up to cover an interdisciplinary territory ranging from improvised music to documentary-making, graced by touches garnered from his professional experience in the field of television, publicity and teaching.

In his work, Sucari explores the semantic relation of oral expression and gesture, of sound and image, when they enter the fortuitous world of hazard and improvisation. These are works made in collaboration with polypoets like Xavier Sabater in Cristo y tres tiros (1991) and the contemporary dance performer Ina Dunkel in Resonancia es mímesis (1999) and Kurt Schwitters, poemas en danza (1995).

Sucari participated in Eugeni Bonet's programme Señales de video and has received grants from the Generalitat of Catalonia, Pompeu Fabra University Institute of the Audiovisual, the Navarre Video Festival and the Ibero-American Cooperation Institute Video Festival, aid that has given him a solid platform for making his latest works known. These include Viajes imaginarios I ("Imaginary Journeys I", 1995) and Viajes imaginarios II ("Imaginary Journeys II", 1996), REM. Estudios sobre el comportamiento nocturno ("REM. Studies in Nocturnal Behaviour", 1998) and Parálisis, sobre el estado de terror ("Paralysis, on the State of Terror", 2001).

As Eugeni Bonet points out, for Sucari video is a means of discovering the reality and culture of our times, and his work becomes more diaphanous the more it is confined within the documentary format, though with the freedom enjoyed by the essay, in the literary sense of the word*.
