An essay on Cy TWOMBLY by J.F. GUITON, Karin STEMPEL et Ursula WEVERS. From the first image, the need for an explanation arises, for an attempt to read TWOMBLY's work. The authors then try to propose confrontations and echoes between the paintings and literary, cinematic or sound quotations by Joyce, Rimbaud, Von Sternberg, Schöndorff... A few questions may arise : how do you read TWOMBLY's sensitive surfaces, his graphs, traces and scratches out loud ? How do you play with the void ? Each line carries its absence, its obliteration in itself, like the remnants of motionless classic Roman statues ; how do you move the lines and signs, how do you write about disorder and disarray, how do you paint whiteness, light and desire, where vulgarity and stiffness arise ?
