Summary :
Choosing key-works in the imaginary of the Western culture, the series called “Palettes” tells in each episode the story of a different painting. In a word, it tells the genealogy of the painting. For a painting has its ancestors and its descendants. A double technical and philosophical knowledge, fed on by a long tradition, gave birth to the painting. And the painting itself gave birth, year after year, to a multitude of other images…
Assuming the idea that the deep meaning of a painting is conveyed by the choice of colours and themes, we dissect the canvas from its most visible composition to its deepest significance.

Highly placed, the point of view is supposing a viewer to stand above the scene. The effect of perspective is achieved by the convergence of the lines toward a near to the center area. Colours, spacing of the objects, low-angled lighting and perspective of the architecture, everything converges to produce an illusion of depth. Le lorrain builds his paintings as sceneries of theater, combining any kind of elements borrowed to the landscape and to the Roman monuments.
Alain Jaubert reveals the secrets of the canvas, the intentions of the painter, the used technics . After Le Lorrain, the painter will at last dare to look face to the sun!!
