Summary :
Edouard Vuillard, who was rather left aside by historians, is coming back to the forefront in modern art history. This film explores “Les jardins publics” (Parks), a series of nine paintings dating from 1874. Five panels are in the musée d’Orsay, three in other galleries, and the last one has disappeared. Under the appearant simplicity of the themes (women, children in a park), a plethora of historical, technical and plastic enigmas are to be found. Video devices enable the viewer to solve some of them, and even to reconstruct the shapes and colours of the panel that disappeared during World War II.
