Summary :
An ageing man wonders about the nature of his gaze. The gaze is an impulse. It is also an abyss. The gaze focuses on the outside world but it can also be invaded by it. For this man, the gaze is not horizontal. It is rather a sort of spine: it is what he sees of the world and more particularly what he sees of women that keep him standing. He keeps on looking at them but he gave up the idea of taking what he sees, just as he gave up the idea of leaving a museum with a painting under his coat. When he sees extremely violent images which lead to someone’s death, he does not look down, and tries to understand. He laments the fact that this violence does not take any cultivated form. That those who use it against others do not imagine that violence could be represented instead of being experienced. And then, some images reconcile him with the world, like a horizontal line or the fascination exercised by a passing-by, darkening scenery someone would look at from a train.
