Collection : Musée d'Orsay
Genre : Documentary, Portrait

Summary :
October 1888 : having lived in Arles for eight months, Van Gogh painted his room. One year later, committed in the Saint-Paul de Mausole hospice, near Saint-Rémy, he felt the need to make two copies of this painting he particularly liked. This picture, so famous because it was so much reproduced under so many different graphic forms, was very important for the painter. It is voluntarily simple, and looks strange: it suggests rest, but the objects seem to flee, and space to distort. Many authors wrote about it, pointing at, for example, the painter’s madness, but what if he was right? The room was destroyed during the 1945 bombings.
