Summary :
The story of the Saint-Lazare station is part of the urban plan decided by Napoléon III when he came to power. It was undertaken by Prefect Haussmann as soon as 1835, it was the plan that gave Paris its current shape. However, in the beginning (it was designed in1835 and inaugurated in 1837), it was only meant to be a holiday line to Saint-Germain. “Le chemin de fer” (The Railroad) was painted by Manet in 1873, and Monet’s painting came a little while after: like Caillebotte, and each one of them in a different way, they, and others, painted Saint-Lazare, and a few differences enable us to date the paintings.
