Summary :
A naked woman lying on a bed : a subject that has always belonged to the history of painting. However, this painting caused a fierce scandal to break during the 1865 salon. This indecent woman who looks directly into the spectators’ eyes does not correspond to any of the classical standards respected by the pompous painters of the time. Manet, who had already become famous for his “Déjeuner sur l’herbe”, exhibited in the Salon des Refusés two years earlier, became the hero of the young generation that invented impressionism.
