Summary :
Nadar made most of the portraits that made him one of the most important photographers of the 19th century between 1853 and 1860. It was the age of innocence of emerging photography, before the industrialization of the “not free and resembling” portrait made its aura, its magic fade. Concentraring on about thirty portraits of famous (Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt, George Sand and so on) or unknown people, the film investigates the photographer’s work and tools, the role of the frame, of composition, of light, of pose, but also of optical technique and chemistry. Every element of the film underlines the role and importance of Nadar’s look, its force and modernity.
