Summary :
In RITE AND EXPRESSION, the church of Our Lady of Rosario, built in the 17th century, is transformed into a figure symbolizing the perverse discrepancy between image and reality. The slaves had chosen that church as their place of worship, although they had built it themselves. The artist's sophisticated pastiche of icons, African rhythms and earthly motifs turns out to be a counter-appropriation, or a re-appropriation of a History that is drowned in the official History of a country.
