Summary :
In the early 19th century, Marseille was a bustling, cosmopolitan city, clustered around a harbour that changed little since the city's inception.
Over the course of the century, Marseille was to undergo major transformations and processes of modernization. But it resisted borrowing the straights line grids that were considered synonimous with progress. It opted instead for the curve, for the twists and bends, more suited to its character and customs. This film evoques the sounds an d colours of Marseille through its 19 century chroniclers and novelists such as Stendhal and Flaubert, and as well the music of Rossini and Gounod.
