Summary :
First movie of the collection “Architectures” to treat of a Middle Ages edifice, The Abbey-church of Holy Foy at Conques lets us dicover one of the most important works built in the France of the 11th century. The abbey-church – i.e. a church belonging to an abbey – was built to answer to the huge influx of pilgrims, alerted by the miracles of Holy-Foy, christian martyr of the 9th century. Her relics are still exhibited there, but this is mostly the architectural achievement which interests the director Stan Neumann. The exiguity of the site gave occasion to technical innovations ; the greatness and the luminosity of the monument eludes the preconceived ideas about the “romanesque art”, of which this abbey-church, as shows the movie, an emblematic edifice is.
