Summary :
Three years before the beginning of the 20th century, Arnold Böcklin celebrated his 70th birthday. It was a major event in Europe and he received congratulations from all over the world. In Germanic countries, he was considered as the greatest painter of the 19th century. Having lived in Italy most of his life, he rediscovered antiquity and mythology, and took them to the subconscious realm. He was the painter of dreams, of imaginary landscapes and of fantasy. He was one of the pillars of the Symbolist movement in Europe, and played a decisive role in Chirico and Maw Ernst’s debuts, became in his own way an inspiration for surrealism. His most famous work, “The Isle of the Dead”, is one of the most copied, reproduced, distorted, interpreted works in the history of painting... Using this major work as a basis, the film takes us inside the universe of the artist, who remains rather unknown in France. It is a good opportunity to discover an essential work for the comprehension of modern art.
