PHILOSOPHIE DU VERBE

of SAPIN Véronique

FRANCE, 2016, 00:05:00

Production : SAPIN Véronique
Genre : Video art
Keyword : Philosophy, Allegory

Summary :
"The Good," Aristotle said in the book I of the Nicomachean Ethics, "is what everything tends to." In the video "Philosophie du verbe", Veronique Sapin plays with this "tender" language by using it in its concrete and physical dimension: on the image, a string is to be stretched, and when it is stretched, the string symbolizes equilibrium, the proper, the Good, like the string of a bow or that of a musical instrument to play in tune, it can help to conserve or conquer the Good. To continue to stretch, the string needs the constant effort of each. In the image, women hold and control the string. All have a role to play in order to keep it stretched. The video is a metaphor for the necessary and constant struggle against attacks on physical integrity and rights of women.

Véronique Sapin thus metaphorizes what Hannah Arendt calls "acting together": acting is a responsibility, the opposite of resignation: to say no, to refuse, to be able to be indignant …

The succession of action verbs that hammer the image of the video echoes the thought of the philosopher according to which action and speech are closely linked. The video exposes the fact that from the gathering of people is born the political power which "springs among human beings when they act together, and falls back as soon as they disperse."
