Summary :
The Galleria Umberto I is one of the last built, covered passages in Europe. It is the accomplishment and the last manifestation of one of the most emblematic architectural figures in the 19th century, who invented it and did not survive it, except under the degraded and appoverished appearance of a shopping arcade or of the mall. Galleria Umberto I belongs to the last generation of passages, to the monumental phase. Its creation was the direct consequence of the cholera epidemic that had struck Italy.
