Summary :
The "queen of citadels" by Vauban is the model of the military buildings that line the France. The citadel of Lille was built between 1668 and 1671 at the request of Louis XIV, basing on plans of the military engineer and architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. He designs his stronghold as a response to the evolution of the art of war. If it has lost its original function, it owes to its rigor and its formal simplicity to have become a source of inspiration for the great contemporary architects.
